Hunterston Power Station
AWD designed a triple-deck suspended access platform which was used to install a protective membrane around the reactor building. This membrane prevented the ingress of water during decommissioning of the nuclear power station.
The bottom deck was a Technitruss space frame, articulated to follow the shape of the building. The space frame was hung from drop tubes which were supported by winches from rigs on the roof of the platform. The upper decks and platform roof were supported on the drop tubes.
Each section of access platform was assembled at ground level and lifted into place then connected together which minimised working at height.
The structure was fully redundant ensuring that the failure of any structural component did not lead to platform failure.
